Physical Education

‘Physical exercise is not only essential to us leading a healthy life, but it is also the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.' John F Kennedy

At St James Primary School, we believe in encouraging physical activity from an early age. It not only benefits a child’s development, it also promotes the development of motor skills, cognitive and social skills.

We actively encourage the development of social skills and teamwork (collaboration), through sports such as football, hockey, netball, basketball and rugby. Children enjoy taking part in Haringey Sports Development Competitions. This enables us to compete against other school in Haringey, in sports such as football, table tennis, rugby, netball and athletics and our aim is that every child has at least one opportunity to represent our school in sport before they leave us in Year 6.

There are many extra-curricular clubs on offer at St James Primary; gymnastics, tennis, fencing and football clubs. Key Stage 2 children benefit from specialist coaching in bikeability (cycle training), swimming, multi sports workshops, fencing and netball.

We encourage all children to have a healthy lifestyle and try to ensure that they possess the knowledge and understanding to maintain physical activity throughout their lives. With that goal in mind, we take part in the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel, which is the UK's largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge. We are proud to announce that in 2022, St James Primary School was ranked the top small primary school in Haringey, the third small primary in London and 47th small primary in the UK.
