Pupil Wellbeing
Research shows that developing positive mental health and wellbeing is most effective when it takes place early in a child’s life and we recognise the importance of this at St James Primary. We do this by working closely with parents and carers to build self esteem and resilience and identify any issues as early as possible.
Our values of KINDNESS, RESPECT, JOY, WISDOM and PERSERVERANCE, help us create an environment within school that supports the development of positive mental health, wellbeing and healthy lifestyles. You can see some examples of this at the side of this page.
We also know that children learn more effectively, if they are happy in their learning, believe in themselves, have good relationships with their friends and teachers. A key component for this is that children feel safe at school; that school supports them and they have a place where they belong.
Pupil Voice plays a vital role in our school community, providing children with a platform to express their views and opinions in a respectful and constructive manner. We are proud that 100% of our pupils’ report feeling safe at school, reflecting our commitment to their wellbeing.
In addition to the national curriculum subjects, we aim to equip our children with essential social and emotional skills to help them navigate challenging situations and build positive relationships. These include:
· identifying and managing their feelings and their behaviour, and reach out for help where necessary
· building and managing healthy relationships
· self-control
· resolving conflict and overcome difficulties
· being self-aware
· making good decisions
· building resilience, self-esteem and confidence
· thinking positively about themselves and how they perceive the world around them
· growing into well-rounded and healthy adults.
How do we do this?
We are committed to supporting children’s emotional and mental wellbeing through a range of strategies and approaches:
Zones of Regulation
We adopt a whole-school approach to emotional literacy through the Zones of Regulation framework. This helps children identify and understand their emotions, while equipping them with strategies to return to the 'green zone'—a state of calm and focus that supports learning and wellbeing.
Classroom Check-In Systems
Each classroom features a check-in system, allowing children to visually express their current emotional state. These check-ins enable adults to speak with the children, understand the reasons behind their emotions, and provide tailored support as needed.
Weekly PSHE Lessons
Our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) lessons offer dedicated time for mindfulness activities and provide opportunities for children to deepen their understanding of essential topics related to wellbeing. For more details, please refer to our [PSHE curriculum page].
‘Trailblazers’ Mental Health Support
Whole-class, group, and individual sessions have run through the ‘Trailblazers’ program. This is delivered by specialist providers from Haringey CAMHS, these sessions focus on strengthening mental health, emotional resilience, and overall wellbeing.
By embedding these practices into our school environment, we aim to nurture every child’s emotional and mental health, empowering them to thrive both academically and personally.
