PE Provision And Premium

At St James Primary School, we recognise how important sport and PE is to the emotional, social and physical well being of our children.  We know from pupil surveys that our children enjoy their PE lessons – learning new sports and skills as well as developing their teamwork, resilience, determination and self belief.  Our PE takes a varied form and we provide a minimum of two hours of PE a week for Years 1 to 6.

Over the academic year, we cover gymnastics, dance, netball, hockey, football, dodgeball, rounders, tennis, tag rugby, cricket and kwick cricket, volleyball, swimming, badminton, athletics, multisports and fencing.

PE Premium Grant

The government provides all schools with school sport funding to improve and sustain the breadth and quality of PE and sport provision.  Allocation for the academic year 2023 – 2024 is calculated on the basis of the number of pupils on roll in the January 2022 census.  Consequently the school receives £17,788.

Our intended outcomes for 2023 - 2024 are

  • To increase pupil enjoyment and participation in physical activity, PE and school sports so that pupils attain the performance level they are capable of achieving
  • To improve the quality of teaching in order for all pupils to make regular and sustained progress
  • To support the delivery of the PE curriculum through specialist external coaches
  • To continue to improve the frequency, breadth and quality of PE and sport provision
  • To enhance the quality of PE equipment and resources to aid teaching across KS1 and KS
  • To provide greater opportunity for sport at break times overseen by our House Captains

Swimming, Sport Enrichment and After School Clubs

At St James Primary, we provide our children with the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons at Park Road swimming pool.   Currently our Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 enjoy weekly lessons there.

Our Year 4, 5 and 6s take part in weekly netball coaching sessions run by a qualified netball coach and our Year 5s and 6s also take part in weekly fencing lessons run by FigtingFit Fencing.

Many of our after school clubs focus on promoting fitness and a love of sport.  We run football clubs, alongside gymnastics, fencing, chess and yoga.  For more information on these visit Before and After School Clubs
