Reflecting Realities – We have some new books…
Did you know that only 7% of all children’s books that were published in 2018 featured BAME (Black and Minority Ethnic Groups) characters?
As gate keepers to the world of books we as a school have a responsibility to ensure that children experience books that reflect, value and validate their own realities as well as books that offer an insight into realities beyond their own to broaden and enrich their world perspective.
Consequently, in conjunction with the Children’s Book shop in Muswell Hill we have purchased some inclusively- representative books for the classrooms and library that reflect the realities of all our children. Over October these have been on exhibition in our library before being assigned to classrooms.
We will be adding these to our recommended reading lists that are available on our website.
We are asking children to review these new books but would also welcome any parents and carers who would like to share some of these books alongside their children and provide feedback.
Please contact Ms Brady if you are interested or have any further questions. Happy Reading!!!
Over the Summer holidays we challenged our children to keep track of all their reading in one day, one week or for the whole of the holidays and produce a ‘reading river’. Here are just some of the amazing and interesting ones that they have made. All of these, plus the others will be on display around school. Do have a look - it makes us all realise that words are everywhere and how important reading is in our every day life!
