School lunches during COVID 19
At the moment our lunchtimes are a little different. All classes apart from Reception eat their lunch in their classrooms and KS2 bring in a packed lunch from home.
We are currently trialling hot lunches for our KS1 children hat is prepared off site and transported to school every day in portable hot boxes. If this is successful we will be rolling this out to KS2 as soon as possible.
Because the meals come in individual packaging, they have to be pre ordered and our menus look a little different and change on a two week cycle. You can find these on this page.
We are delighted that so many children at St James Primary are now having school lunches and we feel that it's a lot to do with our caterers, Accent, will have brought with them new and exciting menus that will changes on a three week rotation. You can find our new menus on this page but they are also displayed on our notice boards and in classroom windows.
So in addition to dishes such as Chinese stir fry with noodles, roast turkey with cranberry sauce, traditional lasagne and homemade burgers, every lunch time we will also be providing a vegetarian option such as homemade frittata, Mediterranean paella and wholemeal pasta with green pesto, spinach and parmesan. In addition there will be also be a new salad bar with a range of fresh salads prepared every day, jacket potatoes and a selection of freshly made bread. We have thought carefully about our dessert offering and have decided – in order to help our children to be as healthy as possible – to ensure of puddings are sugar free* and limited to twice a week. Children will be able to choose desserts twice a week but every day they will also have the option of yoghurt or fresh fruit.
Accent are extremely experienced at catering for primary school palettes and a range of children with all sorts of dietary needs. They are committed to reducing salt and sugar levels in our young children’s food. Their meat is Red Tractor accredited and fruit and vegetables are sourced from the UK where possible. Our meals will be freshly prepared and cooked from scratch every day at Our Lady Of Muswell Hill.
As a number of our children have dietary and allergy issues, you will see that each dish on our menus is clearly marked with ingredients ie: contains milk, contains eggs, contains fish – helping you and your children to make more informed choices. If you do have any queries on this please do let us know.
The cost of our school meals to parents for children in Year 3 and above(who pay for their school meals) will be £2.80 per day. School meals for KS1 will still be free to parents. If you would like to find out more about applying for free school meals or you think you might be applicable, please pop in to the School Office and they will be very happy to help.
*We have not replaced sugar with any sweeteners – instead our catering company are using fruit or agave. Agave nectar has a very low GI — primarily because almost all of the sugar in it is fructose. It has very little glucose, at least when compared to regular sugar and consequently it doesn’t spike blood sugar levels much
