We are delighted that so many children at St james Primary are now having school lunches and we feel that it's a lot to do with our new caterers, Accent, will have brought with them a new and exciting menu that will changes on a three week rotation. You can find our new menus on this page but they are also displayed on our notice boards and in classroom windows.
So in addition to dishes such as Chinese stir fry with noodles, roast turkey with cranberry sauce, traditional lasagne and homemade burgers, every lunch time we will also be providing a vegetarian option such as homemade frittata, Mediterranean paella and wholemeal pasta with green pesto, spinach and parmesan. In addition there will be also be a new salad bar with a range of fresh salads prepared every day, jacket potatoes and a selection of freshly made bread. We have thought carefully about our dessert offering and have decided – in order to help our children to be as healthy as possible – to limit ‘higher in sugar’ puddings such as sticky Jamaican ginger cake or chocolate mousse pudding with chocolate sauce. Children will be able to choose from desserts such as these twice a week but every day they will also have the option of yoghurt or fresh fruit.
Accent are extremely experienced at catering for primary school palettes and a range of children with all sorts of dietary needs. They are committed to reducing salt and sugar levels in our young children’s food. Their meat is Red Tractor accredited and fruit and vegetables are sourced from the UK where possible. Our meals will be freshly prepared and cooked from scratch every day at Our Lady Of Muswell Hill.
Recently we have been working with our catering partners, Accent on a new initiative to reduce the sugar in the desserts we serve on Tuesday and Thursday. From Monday next week, our new dessert range will be sugar free and will include yogurts and fresh fruit every day and the following puddings:
- Week 1 - sugar free banana flapjack and sugar free marmalade bread and butter pudding
- Week 2 – sugar free banana cake and sugar free orange and poppy seed drizzle cake
- Week 3 – sugar free spiced carrot cake with orange frosting and sugar free flapjack
We have not replaced sugar with any sweeteners – instead our catering company are using fruit or agave. Agave nectar has a very low GI — primarily because almost all of the sugar in it is fructose. It has very little glucose, at least when compared to regular sugar and consequently it doesn’t spike blood sugar levels much
As a number of our children have dietary and allergy issues, you will see that each dish on our menus is clearly marked with ingredients ie: contains milk, contains eggs, contains fish – helping you and your children to make more informed choices. If you do have any queries on this please do let us know.
The cost of our school meals to parents for children in Year 3 and above(who pay for their school meals) will be £2.80 per day. School meals for KS1 will still be free to parents. If you would like to find out more about applying for free school meals or you think you might be applicable, please pop in to the School Office and they will be very happy to help.
